There are several things come together when it comes to SEO, and you can not say that there is only one way to do SEO, it is only the goal of getting to the top of searches is the same for every SEO player.

The really big player when it comes to search engines is Google. Google is clearly the most dominant search engine on the Internet today. So the focus is often on Google when it comes to search engine optimization. The position as the largest search engine is also binding, therefore Google uses a lot of resources to develop themselves in order to give users a better search experience.

In breif Google works by sending a program “a spider” to websites around the world in order to gather information. When the spider reaches a web site it indexes the entire website. Indexing is the way Google store a copy of all the public web pages from a website to their own database so that Google quickly can find content from that website. I must emphasize that this is a very simplified way to describe the processes which makes Google work. Google has so far indexed billions of websites and has over 450,000 servers (according to data from wikipedia.org at present time) and the numbers are growing daily.

This is where search engine optimization comes into play, by improving and optimizing a website it is also possible to improve the website ranking in search results. Search engine optimization is something everyone can do, a search for SEO on google shows you a lot of results regarding SEO described in details.

Then one wonders:
If I can SEO it myself why should I pay others to do SEO?

There are 3 good answers to this question:

  • Experience! It dosn’t makes you a good SEO just by reading about it. You need to have some degree of expertise to do successful SEO.
  • Time! SEO work is a slow process, it takes many hours to get a site completely search engine optimized, if you are also inexperienced it takes even longer.
  • Updates! Google continuously improves the way they index websites so they can give more relevant search results. This require that we constantly keep up to date and improve our own SEO skills.
